Reflectional/Thematic
Symmetry
Reflectional symmetry is a
hallmark of human agency in three-dimensional lithic
iconography. This seems to have long been instinctively
required, at least thematically, in simple lithic images.
In this material the symmetry seems to be more thematic than
reflectional - the same theme represented differently but quite
recognizably similar. It appears that first one side of a
Figure Stone was formed with particular attention to detail,
then the opposite one was cut and ground less conscientiously
but displaying the same motif. |
